Open ended idea
Specialist subject teachers for all arts (Visual Art, Music, and Drama) should be teaching in every school and in every phase. Often primary schools do not have a dedicated Art teacher in particular and this is taught by classroom teachers from FS-Year 6, some of whom aren't confident in teaching this. As a consequence, when students arrive in secondary school they struggle without a solid foundation of skills in the subject. It also means in secondary school the curriculum must start at 0 and teach very basic rudimentary skills. This leads to disengagement from the subject because they "aren't good at it" and see no value in it. For those students that enjoy and are talented in Art, their progress is hindered due to the curriculum and they are disadvantaged if taking GCSE because their skills are very basic.
